What is executive dysfunction? (in plain English)

Executive dysfunction is difficulty with the brain's management skills — starting tasks, planning, organising, prioritising, switching, and regulating emotions and time. It's central to ADHD (and shows up in anxiety, depression and burnout too). It's not about intelligence or effort; the support that helps is external structure: lists, timers, visible plans and tiny steps.
The brain's manager
'Executive functions' are the mental skills that run the show: initiating, planning, organising, prioritising, working memory, task-switching, and emotional/time regulation.
When they're impaired — as in ADHD — you can know exactly what to do and still not be able to make yourself do it. That gap is executive dysfunction, not laziness.
What it looks like day to day
Task paralysis, a to-do list that overflows your memory, time slipping away, decision fatigue, forgetting steps, and big feelings that hijack the plan.
Naming it helps: it reframes 'what's wrong with me?' into 'this is a known difference, and there are tools.'
What actually helps
Externalise everything your working memory can't hold — brain-dumps, visible plans, timers. Shrink tasks to the first step. Plan around real energy.
